Welcome to the E.L. Meyers High School Speech and Debate Homepage!
The Meyers Speech and Debate Team
has been active since 1997 under the guidance of our head coaches Mr. Kim
Borland and Mrs. Ruth Borland. Since then we have grown in size, talent,
and maturity, competing in various competitive tournaments all over Pennsylvania.
We have also travelled to such locations as New York City, Boston Massachusetts,
Arlington Virginia, and New Haven Connecticut.
Our organization prides itself
on diligence, hard work, and respect for ourselves and for others. We involve
ourselves in various activities in the field of forensics, including Dramatic
performance, various stylings of Debate, Student Congress, Original Oratory,
Extemporaneous Speech Events, and various other forms of Interpretive Speech.
We are always open to new faces, and all Meyers students are welcome at our
practices to get a glimpse of what it is we do on our team.
For more information, consult the Contact
Information section of this site or drop in on us during one of our practice
nights. Practices are generally held from 7 PM-9 PM on weeknights during
the school year. Practice dates can be found on the Schedule section of this
website.
THE E.L. MEYERS SPEECH AND DEBATE TEAM MISSION
STATEMENT
It is the mission of the Meyers
Speech and Debate Team to promote among the students of the E.L. Meyers
Junior/Senior High School the development of oral communication skills; critical
thinking; appreciation of literature and the spoken word; performance of
the spoken word; argumentation; understanding and appreciation of civics
and public affairs; and respect and appreciation for the beliefs, opinions,
and talents of others.
We believe that this mission is
best accomplished by encouraging all students in Meyers to participate in
a program which includes Speech and Debate competition with students from
other places and to observe and participate in a variety of dramatic and
public affairs speech and debate activities.
We believe that for an individual
student to realise the benefit of this program the student needs to work
toward the improvement of his or her talents with regard to oral communication
performance, critical thinking and argumentation by practice; observation;
and the making and recieving of thoughtful and considerate criticism.
